Candidate list will be available June 11. Stay tuned for public comment guidance and get ready to show up (again) for our libraries.
If you’ve been following the library board over past few years, you’ve seen how much power they have to either support or damage our library system. Two seats (Chair Ann Silver and Vice Chair Lea Moser) are opening up, and the county commission will fill these seats at their regular meeting on June 16.
The list of applicants is not yet publicly available. It will be published here on Thursday, June 11. We will be sending out some public comment guidance on June 14, but we already know what qualities we will be hoping for in the new library trustees. The ideal candidates will:
- understand that the library is a public good, reject privatization, believe that the library is here to serve ALL community members;
- support library staff, respect their expertise and training, not intend to micromanage library operations;
- have in-depth knowledge of the Washoe County Library System, either through working at the library or participating in library board meetings over the past few years;
- seek a trustee position because they care about the libraries, not as a stepping stone to running for office.
For the June 16 meeting, you can provide public comment in person or make online public comment ahead of time. Information about making public comments can be found here.
If this is an issue you have been following closely and feel strongly about, you can always email, call, or request a meeting with your commissioner prior to the public meeting. Commissioner contact information is here.
