Things are looking up for the library board! In June, Ann Silver and Lea Moser were replaced by new trustees who understand and support Washoe County Libraries. Andrea Tavener has been a regular commenter at library board meetings and previously worked as the public information officer for WCLS. Marcus Nesbitt worked for years as a security guard at the Downtown Reno Library. In this role, he showed respect for all library patrons, and he has been at several library board meetings over the past few years.
Soon after these new trustees were appointed, controversial trustee Gianna Jacks announced her resignation. Therefore, on July 14th, the BCC will again select a library trustee. They will be selecting this trustee from the same list they used in the last round.
For this round, we ask that the commissioners select a trustee who:
- Has been engaged in the struggle to support Washoe County libraries over the past few years. Why would someone who has never stepped up to oppose book ban attempts or call for library funding want to serve on the board?
- Seek a trustee position because they care about the libraries, not as a stepping stone to running for office.
For the July 14 meeting, you can provide public comment in person or make online public comment ahead of time. Information about making public comment can be found here.
If this is an issue you have been following closely and feel strongly about, you can always email, call, or request a meeting with your commissioner prior to the public meeting. Commissioner contact information is here.
