Library lovers and troublemakers,

Our library board is undergoing a radical transformation. On Tuesday, July 14, we have the chance to keep that change going.

In June, two new trustees who understand and support Washoe County Libraries were appointed. Andrea Tavener has been a regular commenter at library board meetings and previously worked as the public information officer for Washoe County Library System. Marcus Nesbitt worked for years as a security guard at the Downtown Reno Library. In this role, he showed respect for all library patrons, and he has been at several library board meetings over the past few years.

Soon after these new trustees were appointed, Gianna Jacks announced her resignation. Therefore, on July 14th, the BCC will again select a new library trustee. They will be selecting this trustee from the same list they used in the last round.

Plan to attend in person or submit written comment by 4 P.M. next Monday.

📅 Board of County Commissioners Meeting
Tues. July 14 at 10 A.M.
Washoe County Commission Chambers (1001 E 9th St, Reno, NV 89512)

We have some talking points below.

For this round, we ask that the commissioners select a trustee who:

  1. Has been engaged in the struggle to support Washoe County libraries over the past few years. Why would someone who has never stepped up to oppose book bans or support library funding want to serve on the board?
  2. Seek a trustee position because they care about the libraries, not as a stepping stone to running for office.

If this is an issue you have been following closely and feel strongly about, you can always email, call, or request a meeting with your commissioner prior to the public meeting. Commissioner contact information is here.

If you have specific questions, feel free to email us: freedomtoreadnevada@gmail.com

See you Tuesday,
